If you were curious:

* It owns its name because of its smoked color, it's wrong to call it "smoked topaz".

* A very dark brown to black opaque variety is known as Morion. (1)

* Quartz is the most common of all minerals and accounts for as much as 12% of the volume of the earth's crust!

* The name "quartz" comes from the Greek word krustallos, meaning ice, because it was thought that quartz was ice formed by the gods. (2)
