Ancient EGYPTIAN Jewelry at MET Museum (Part II)

In my last post about Egypt I showed you some combs, bangles, anklets, necklaces, etc; but I saved my favorite items for the end: pectorals and rings!

En el último artìculo sobre Egipto les mostré algunos peines, brazaletes, tobilleras, collares, etc, pero dejé para lo último mis joyas favoritas, pectorales y anillos!

If you think in Egyptian jewelry maybe the image of a stunning pectoral will cross your mind, like this monochromatic turquoise collar, or the multicolored faience (ceramic) one, or the beautiful "cloisonné" (fr.) pectorals.

Egyptians mastered the cloisonné technique, which consists of creating small metal cells or walls, and then cutting stones (they also cut glass) in the exact shape of the cell or "cloisson", and then pasting them to the base of the cells. The results are amazing, it's truly unbelievable how they achieved that level of precision without any of our contemporary tools.

Si piensas en joyería egipcia posiblemente te pase por la mente la imagen de un imponente pectoral, como este pectoral monocromático en turquesa, o uno multiculor en faience (cerámica), o los hermosos pectorales de "cloissoné" (fr).

Los egipcios eran maestros en esta técnica que consiste en crear pequeñas celdas o paredes de metal, y después cortar piedras (tambien cortaron vidrios) con el tamaño exacto de la celda y adherirlas con pegamento a la base de éstas. Los resultados son impresionantes, es increible como lograban esa precisión sin nuestras herramientas contemporáneas.

And last but not least, Seal Rings! Most of the rings I saw had a "Khepri", which was a scarab representing a rising Sun god. It was sign of fertility and rebirth for Egyptians, and that belief comes from the fact that the scarab beetle pushes through the desert an excrement ball where it previously deposited its eggs, until a point where newly born scarabs start to come out! Watching that event must be intriguing, new life coming from "nothing" - self creation! Because of this, they associated it with the daily self rebirth of the Sun.

These rings are named "Seal Rings" because in fact they are stamps! they have a spinning axis, one side of the ring has a sculpted stone/gold/cloissone beetle and the other side a personal insignia for printing in clay. Multipurpose! I love it!

Y por último, Anillos de Sello! Casi todos los anillos que ví tenían el escarabajo, "Kephri", la encarnacion del sol saliente, para los Egipcios era sìmbolo de fertilidad y renacimiento.
El escarabajo pelotero empuja por el desierto una bola de excremento en la cual depositó huevos, y un día nuevos escarabajos emergen de ella, ver tal evento debe ser intrigante, vida nueva saliendo de la "nada", auto creación!, es por eso que lo asociaron con el Sol que nace del horizonte todos los días.
Estos anillos se llaman de "Sello" porque lo eran!, tienen un eje giratorio, de un lado tienen al escarabajo, y del otro lado la insignia personal para imprimirla en arcilla, multifuncional! me encanta!
